While the two airlines became one long ago, I thought it appropriate to bid adeiu to the last recognizable remnant of our Southern Airways. The Martin 404 was the first airliner on which I flew. My hat is off to the ladies and gentlemen who plopped this aircraft onto the small patch of concrete in Tupelo, Miss. In 1979, Southern Airways merged with North Central to create Republic Airlines and in turn was purchased in 1986 by Northwest Orient Airlines -- the company dropped the "Orient" -- to become the airline that survived until Delta purchased NWA in 2008.
