Fixing the toilet. Or, what makes one appreciate simple mechanical systems and the local hardware store
The other day we had some issues with the toilet in the U.S. Segment. Late in day I went to use it. When I turned it on (it has pumps and fans that need to run) it sounded a little...

After two alarms, finally, I take a flight around the space station
I know this happened a while ago, but it was a very interesting day for me. My Soyuz crew and I moved our Soyuz from one docking port to another. Specifically, we undocked our Soyuz from the aft end of...

Living in space: washing hair, sleeping, not bumping into things, getting lost and yes, using the toilet
I have been on the Station forawhile now and I am going through the usual period of adjustments -- adjusting not just as a first time flier but also as a first time long duration person. As a first time...

There is a terrific bang and jerk and just like that, you are in space.
About six hours before our scheduled launch time, we began our launch preparations. Up until then, the time in Baikonur had been on a relatively relaxed pace. But, now, everything was kicked into high gear. We had some final medical...

Come fly with me to the International Space Station
Three years. People often ask how long it takes to prepare for a space flight. For a long duration flight on the International Space Station it takes about three years, maybe a little less depending on how you are getting...

With extreme apologies to one of my favorite writers, Dave Barry, I have genericized his:
HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS GUIDE
by Dave Barry
We're
entering the heart of hurricane season. Any day now, you're going to
turn on the TV and see a weatherperson pointing to some radar blob out
in the Atlantic and making two basic meteorological points:
- There is no need to panic.
- We could all be killed.
Yes,
hurricane season is an exciting time to be in the Southland. If you're
new to the area, you're probably wondering what you need to do to
prepare for the possibility that we'll get hit by "the big one." The
best way to get information on this topic is to ask people who were
here during Hurricane Katrina
(we're easy to recognize, because we still smell faintly of b.o. mixed
with gasoline). Based on our experiences, we recommend that you follow
this simple three-step hurricane preparedness plan:

Police have identified the would-be burglar who was found dead in the ventilation shaft of a local business during the weekend. The
body of 46-year-old Benjamin Rodriguez was discovered in the ceiling of
the All Star Sports Bar at 1510 S. State Road 7 on Saturday. Police
said it appears he tried to break into the business and got stuck in
the narrow ductwork of the kitchen ventilation system. The
owner of the bar found several ceiling tiles on the floor when he
opened for business Thursday. Police investigated and classified it as
an attempted burglary.
Two days later, police said the bar owner smelled a foul odor and saw blood on the floor beneath the broken ceiling tiles.Firefighters crawled into the ceiling and discovered Rodriguez's body upside down in the ductwork. It took crews several hours to remove Rodriguez's body from the space, which measured about 2 square feet. At 5 feet 7 inches, 182 pounds, detectives said it would have been impossible for Rodriguez to squeeze through the narrow space. Police
records show Rodriguez has a lengthy criminal history that includes
arrests for cocaine possession, grand theft and reckless driving. The Broward County medical examiner said Rodriguez died of accidental suffocation.
Dave, is he disqualified from Darwin Award candidacy because he died upside down?

As usual, click the photo for a larger version.
Yes, the family bought a 30-year-old ski boat last week. We had fun on the lake during the July 4th weekend, but I had to pry beneath the covers this week. This shot is after I removed the battery. Yes, that is the main red power cable with the insulation off -- lying in a pool of oil and water. I keep telling myself, It's a 30-year-old boat ...
I work with a polite bunch of folks. Here, a team member has corrected the spelling of another colleague's graffiti on a bathroom stall.
Yes, I am continuing with my regimen of a nutritious breakfast diet. Buurrpp.
It's as if no decisions are left to us anymore. Must go left, don't go right, let the other guy have the right-of-way ... where does it end?
