Fixing the toilet. Or, what makes one appreciate simple mechanical systems and the local hardware store
The other day we had some issues with the toilet in the U.S. Segment. Late in day I went to use it. When I turned it on (it has pumps and fans that need to run) it sounded a little...

After two alarms, finally, I take a flight around the space station
I know this happened a while ago, but it was a very interesting day for me. My Soyuz crew and I moved our Soyuz from one docking port to another. Specifically, we undocked our Soyuz from the aft end of...

Living in space: washing hair, sleeping, not bumping into things, getting lost and yes, using the toilet
I have been on the Station forawhile now and I am going through the usual period of adjustments -- adjusting not just as a first time flier but also as a first time long duration person. As a first time...

There is a terrific bang and jerk and just like that, you are in space.
About six hours before our scheduled launch time, we began our launch preparations. Up until then, the time in Baikonur had been on a relatively relaxed pace. But, now, everything was kicked into high gear. We had some final medical...

Come fly with me to the International Space Station
Three years. People often ask how long it takes to prepare for a space flight. For a long duration flight on the International Space Station it takes about three years, maybe a little less depending on how you are getting...

OK, John ... this one's for you
I was shopping for tents the other night on eBay and found these oddities:
This item is, " not designed to be used when flammable fire is nearby
nor, "designed to water resistent heavy rain
Another had, "Polyelthine Wall Panels"
Oh, boy ... I gotta try one of these; the seller says, "The tents can
hole up to
50 people" Man, that sounds painful, and possibly unethical.
As a manufacturer, I found this statement funny:
The
factory passed ISO9001 and won the authentication of 2001 quality
system. We have our own inspection team inside the factory to make
sure the products we get from the factory are in high quality.
Hmmmm ... one of the known pluses of ISO9001 certification is the elimination of the parade of customer representatives into the factory to validate the quality and quality system.

This puzzle makes its way around the internet every few years. How many men are in the pic below? Where does the the extra guy come from after the move?
Clicky on the linky to see the explanation ... I would love to tell you that I understood it, but it's Friday and my brain cells are in limp-home mode.

From an eyewitness to the crash-landing of BA flight 38 Thursday,
"You could see the pilot was desperate, trying to get the plane down."
Newsflash: what goes up must come down. Left to themselves, airplanes will find a way to earth.
From the same news story, this headline from allheadlinenews.com,
British Airways Flight Overshoots Runway
Have a look at the picture one the right and tell me if the plane overshot the runway. Shall I take a poll?
Kevin Anderson also posted an article regarding the words chosen in the aftermath of this incident.
